Salem Arts Festival June 5-7 2009; volunteers needed to help run festival

Salem Arts Festival needs volunteers for…
• Volunteer to run the sound system Friday Night, Saturday and Sunday at the festival
• Gallery sitting and help with the take-in and removal of art for the art exhibition 2 hours at a time
• Coordinating Volunteers
• Contact local newspapers to encourage art critics and writers to review the festival and artists for the festival
• Hanging posters
• Listing the festival on appropriate area websites
• Greeter at Old Town Hall (to direct performers etc.)

The Salem Arts Festival Kick-Off Celebration

Salem Main Streets announces the first annual Salem Arts Festival, to be held in downtown Salem, Mass. from June 5 - 7, 2009. Start your summer with free, family-friendly entertainment and activities.

SALEM, Mass. -- Salem Main Streets announces the first annual Salem Arts Festival, to be held in downtown Salem, Mass. from June 5 - 7, 2009. Start your summer with free, family-friendly entertainment and activities. The Festival features a collaboration of world-class artists and will include interactive events for children. Downtown Salem performance locations include Old Town Hall, with additional activities planned for Pickering Wharf.

On Friday, June 5, at 5:30 p.m., the Festival begins with a with a "Kick-Off Reception" at Old Town Hall. The reception includes a juried art exhibition as well as an Arc Works Exhibition. These exhibits will showcase the work of local artists. During the exhibit visitors will be entertained by the the eclectic sound of the East West Trio, a jazz, funk and blues band.

At 7 p.m., Accumulation Dance, a Boston-based, contemporary dance company will be performing; and at 8 p.m., Rebecca Hains, a professor at Salem State College, presents Gilbert & Sullivan arias.

The reception will provide a sampling of Festival entertainment. Jennifer Bell, manager of Salem Main Streets, describes the Salem Arts Festival as “a something-for-everyone festival, with talented, top-rate performers and artists."

Opening Reception

Juried Art Exhibition includes work by Matthew Altieri, Phillis Beinart, Andrew Carr, Pat Collins, Ellen Hardy, Eija Heward, Oana Lauric, John Plunkett, Janee Rudolph, Racket Shreve, Loretta Spinelli, Cathy Stacey and Joe Victory.

Arc Works Exhibition

Presidential Inauguration 2009 Photos – First Class Petty Officer Mark O’Donald will exhibit photographs culled from his assignment as a photojournalist with the Navy Reserves, covering President Obama’s inauguration.

5:30–7 p.m.
East West Trio -- jazz, funk & blues
East West Trio members Tom Pendergast (guitar), Dave Mercure (bass) and Takuma Anzai (drums) are all graduates of Boston's Berklee College of Music. Tom studied composition, arranging and performance at Berklee and also studied flamenco guitar in Spain, He plays jazz and flamenco throughout the Boston area.

Dave studied composition and performance at Berklee and studied privately with Cecil McBee, Ed Friedland and the late John Neves, and currently performs throughout Boston in jazz and theater settings.

Takuma came to the US in 2003 to study at Berklee and has studied privately with Terri Lyne Carrington, Mark Walker and Jon Hazilla; and has performed with gold-record-winning producer Nicolas Farmakalidis. He is a studio session drummer in the Boston area.

Accumulation Dance, Contemporary Modern Dance
Accumulation Dance will present a series of solos, duets and trios. Their introspective choreography showcases their fluid and graceful movement style. The company is joined by Salem State College alumni Tennille Hahn. For more information visit their website at accumulationdance.org.


8:00 p.m.
Rebecca Hains, soprano; Gilbert and Sullivan arias.
Rebecca Hains, soprano, presens a recital of Gilbert and Sullivan arias. Selections will include highlights from The Pirates of Penzance, HMS Pinafore, The Mikado, and other Gilbert and Sullivan operas, with songs that range from the humorous to the romantic. Hains will be joined by baritone Tom Frates and accompanied by pianist Thomas Dawkins.

About the Salem Arts Festival

The Salem Arts Festival will promote the arts in downtown Salem through a collaborative festival for residents and visitors providing opportunities to highlight the existing artist community and encourage general community participation in the arts.

The Festival will run Jun 5-7, 2009 in Salem at a variety of venues throughout the downtown including a juried art exhibit, gallery shows and live performances. The Festival will include elements for the sophisticated art patron as well as for the art novice, including interactive events for children. The Festival invites participants of diverse backgrounds and ages and welcomes current art patrons, local students and the community at large.

The Salem Arts Festival is organized by Salem Main Streets, the Salem Arts Association, Salem State College, Gordon College, Peabody Essex Museum, American History and Music Festival™ and others, and is made possible by a grant from the Salem Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.
